In an attempt to stay tapped into all things NIL, I’ve sorted through and gathered some interesting NIL-centered news items today. The title of each section will redirect you to the initial article, as I did not translate all of the columns into this page. Just the best cliff notes.

I will continue adding more news as the week unfolds! Please feel free to link any informative or interesting NIL articles in this thread!

1. How some Big 12 football players are adapting to revenue-sharing (Orlando Sentinel)

It’s become a significant moment in intercollegiate athletics, with Brett Yormark comparing it to historic events. The creation of the NCAA (1906), the introduction of athletic scholarships (1956), Title IX (1972), the NCAA v. Board of Regents case (1984), and the Fair Pay to Play Act for NIL (2019).

These life skills developments are about putting you in situations to be able to develop a part of our life that you probably weren’t taught growing up, such as creating an LLC. How do savings accounts work, credit, and how to build your credit? How do you go about doing something like that? What is the difference between a lease and renting?, said Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels.

“They’re not just giving money and saying, ‘Here, do whatever you want with it.’ They’re putting us in situations to build a plan and find out what we can do with our finances rather than just going out and saying, ‘Oh, dang, I just got this much money. Let me go ahead and blow it all, and then realize that you’ll have taxes later down the line,” Daniels added.

Two weeks ago, they brought in a couple of people to talk to about the revenue sharing because there have been so many changes, said West Virginia receiver Jaden Bray. We have to switch to a whole new app. We’ve got to upload everything. There’s so much stuff. So they do a great job of teaching us.

5. NIL Go clearinghouse has its critics (NW Arkansas Democrat Gazette)

Some schools are already voicing their displeasure with the enforcement.

The firm Deloitte’s NIL clearinghouse, called “NIL Go”, was created to police and approve NIL deals in an effort to make sure they’re for a “valid business purpose” and within a fair-market “range of compensation,” according to Stewart Mandel of The Athletic.

Schools are hoping to use NIL deals of $600 or more to attract talent. But it appears schools are trying to get approval for deals that don’t pass the mustard.

The Associated Press reported the newly formed College Sports Commission sent letters to schools Thursday stating it had rejected deals between players and donor-backed collectives formed over the past several years to funnel money to athletes or their schools.

Those arrangements hold no “valid business purpose,” the memo said, and don’t adhere to rules that call for outside NIL deals to be between players and companies that provide goods or services to the general public for profit.

The College Sports Commission said more than 1,500 deals have been cleared since NIL Go launched on June 11th. Ranging in value from three to seven figures.

Here’s a real example of a deal we submitted that was denied, Forsythe wrote. It included social media posts, appearances, and brand promotion — real deliverables, clearly documented.

“Total compensation was $2,333. The athlete had responsibilities. The compensation matched the work. Still denied.”
