The Texas Longhorns handled its business on Saturday, but there’s a lot to unpack from the win. Here’s 32 players and takeaways from the action.
Before we jump into the notes, I did not note every single snap like last week – What I did do was track activity and if a player entered or exited the game. So when I mention a player “played the majority of snaps” or “few” snaps just know those numbers are relative and unofficial.

32 Notes from the Game
- Melvin Hills, Colton Vasek, Kobe Black, Ty Anthony Smith, and Zina Umeozulu were in on the first drive of the game on defense, including a few third downs.
- Zina Umeozulu played 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down on the 2nd drive.
- Lance Jackson entered the game at 5:07 of the 1st Quarter.
- Christian Clark entered the game at 4:10 of the 1st Quarter.
- The Ty Anthony Smith smoke continues to boil as he RIPS the ball off of the San Jose State Running Back.
- ANOTHER forced fumble by the Maniacal Ty Anthony Smith
- Justus Terry entered the game at 11:50 of the 2nd quarter for the first time in his Texas career. He played for two snaps at Defensive Tackle and oddly lined up 2 yards OFF the LOS, almost like it was a hot electric fence and he was scared of it.
- Kobe Black has played a ton in this first half, doing a good job, but gave up a deep crosser for a first down to Schoels.
- Daylan McCutcheon entered with around 6 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, flanking Niblett. He was targeted and gained 3 yards.
- Man, what a treat it is to have Parker Livingstone in this Wide Receiver room.. where would they be without “White Chocolate”…. Mosley injured, Wingo’s drops, we’d be relying on three tight end sets more than we’d like.
- Sophomore Jerrick Gibson entered for one snap, but it was short-lived as Arch attempted a 55-yard Touchdown throw to Ryan Wingo.
- TyAnthony Smith is a hard hitter, but he really needs to have a more consistent pad level down low. He was ran through by a Spartan tailback.
- After Graceson Littleton was beaten on a double move by Danny Scudero, San Jose has targeted Littleton 3-4 times on deeper routes.
- Aaron Butler entered the game with 4:00 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
- Wardell Mack was in pads heading into the locker room..
- Nick Townsend starts the second half at H-Back (TE), he did play some in the first half.
- Texas found a Kicker!!!! Well done, Mr. Shipley – smooth sailing draw from 47!!!
- Josiah Sharma entered the game with 14:47 left in the 4th quarter, playing alongside Hero Kanu, Ethan Burke, and Brad Spence.
- FWIW, Jonah Williams was in pads on the sideline. More so than other “injured” players”
- The lack of aggression from Arch is what worries me sometimes. I’m not sure he fully trusts the right side of the offensive line, and quite frankly, I don’t blame him – Brandon Baker’s first week against Ohio State, I had no problem writing off for obvious reasons – but today was tough
- Lance Jackson has had a very, very positive game. This kid won’t grade well in Alex’s deep dig, but that’s because he played 30+ snaps in the game. I was impressed with his pass rush length and run game fluidity, even though he didn’t get to the finish line as much as we’d like. He’s a freshman.
- Can we get Emaree Winston some more targets? Man, that forward lean in the fourth quarter got me excited
- Interesting trio of Receivers in the 4th quarter while Arch was still in the game. Daylan McCutcheon at X, Aaron Butler at Z, and Ryan Niblett in the Slot.
- Myron Charles, Jonathan Cunningham, and Warren Roberson enter the game with 7:00 left in the 4th quarter.
- Matthew Caldwell enters the game with 6:00 left in the game, up 38-7. Aaron Butler and Daylan McCutcheon in the two-wide with Christian Clark at Running Back.
- The Offensive Line unit for Caldwell was as follows, left to right. Jaydon Chatman, Neto Umeozulu, Conner Robertson, Nate Kibble, and Brandon Baker.
- Kaliq Lockett Alert with 4:45 in the 4th quarter.
- Jaime Ffrench enters the game two snaps later, and he does it illegally, causing a penalty for 12 men in formation. He does enter two plays later.
- Is that, yep, it’s Rett Anderson split out wide for the Texas Longhorns.
- Kade Phillips, Bo Barnes, Marshall Landwher, Smith Orogbo, and Derek Williams enter the game for the first time.
- I did not notice Derek Williams for the duration of the football game; it was on the last defensive drive that Williams was lined up with a mostly freshman group that it hit me. After fading out of the Week 1 game against Ohio State, I wondered if it was a health thing, but it could have been a sort of benching. Given the fact that you wouldn’t put an injured player in the game with 60 seconds remaining.
- Can we just give @Alex Dunlap a shoutout for pumping the tires up on the Parker Livingstone fan bus this February? Nobody, and I mean NOBODY was willing to stretch out and call him a capable starting wide receiver, except for Alex – most were calling for multiple WR additions in the portal.. 4 receptions, 128 yards, and 2 touchdowns… WOW!
