Arch Manning says his struggles are probably mental

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning
The Columbus Dispatch

Here are the highlights from Texas quarterback Arch Manning’s media availability on Monday:

* On whether this was the first time he has faced adversity in his career:
“Yeah. I mean, obviously, I know the type of player I am. I know I’m going to play better, and we’re going to be better as an offense. So I’m excited to get going.”

* On his mechanics resembling a not-so-smooth golf swing:
“I think it’s more just like getting back to flushing—like, you know, flushing a 60-degree. … So just gotta get back to doing that. Yeah, it’s gonna come. I’m not worried. Just gotta get back to playing my game.”

* On how he relaxed over the weekend:
Manning said he was able to unwind by spending time with his family, grabbing dinner with two friends and his brother, and sharing plenty of laughs at Love Supreme Pizza Bar on the east side.

* On James Simon stepping in when CJ Baxter went down:
Manning said he knew Simon from hosting him on a recruiting visit and described him as a really good person who wasn’t nervous when called upon. He added that Simon stepped up immediately with a “let’s go ball” mentality, did a great job, and he’s excited to see him get more reps this week.

* On whether his current challenges are more physical or mental, and how he’s handling them:

Q: Arch, would you say what you’re going through right now is more physical or mental?
Manning: “Probably mental, to be honest. I think I just need to go out there and play my game. I know the type of athlete and player I am—just cut it loose, have some fun, play ball.”

Q: Do you talk to anybody about it? Is there anyone there to support you from the mental aspect?
Manning: “Yeah, I talked to Coach Sark yesterday. We had a really good talk. And then just lean on my family and people in my close corner. And my faith, obviously.”

Q: How much does the transparency of the conversations with Sark help you?
Manning: “Yeah, it helps a lot. Having him be honest with me and tell me what he thinks and how I can get better—it’s great to have that back and forth with the head coach. Blessed to have him in my corner.”
