Life as a college football head coach isn’t easy

Would Steve Sarkisian be better off going to the NFL?

What a long strange journey it has been for Steve Sarkisian this year (and I’m not talking about what’s happened on the field).

Desmond Howard’s Instagram post Monday was just the latest in a series of events off the field that had to have added additional stress to everything that is happening on the field.

In case you’ve been sleeping under a rock, or just haven’t been able to log on to Orangebloods because of Cloudfare issues or depression following the Georgia game, this is what Howard had to say.

“As I’m walking past this tennis ball in my yard (cutaway shot of the tennis ball).  I was also thinking, don’t be surprised if that Texas job opens up at the end of the season,” Howard said in an Instagram post. “You guys were shocked when LSU opened up. Imagine how you’re going to feel if that job in Austin pops open.  I’m not calling or saying anyone’s going to get fired. May be a mutual parting of ways, you dig?”

The life of a college football coach is demanding beyond comprehension.

On a daily basis, you are responsible for the welfare of 105 18-22 year old men who don’t always make the best decisions in life.  You are also responsible for livelihoods of dozens of coaches and staff members who, if you lose your job, they will lose their jobs.  And if you don’t want to lose your job, you better be devoting dozens of hours a week to recruiting (year round) so that you can field the best team possible when the season is underway.

So what is a man to do?
