When I was ten, the thing I wanted the most was a pair of parachute pants. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video was out and parachute pants were all the rage.
Christmas morning came that year and alas… no parachute pants.

Maybe it was because they were too expensive. Or maybe it was because my parents had better taste than I did. Or maybe it was because I was ten and they didn’t want me running around in parachute pants. I don’t know why my parents didn’t buy them for me, I only know that I didn’t get them that year. In fact, I have never owned a pair of parachute pants.
While I was definitely disappointed at the lack of zippers on all of my pants, there was a silver lining. The gift I did get that year was a basketball goal set up in the back yard.
I played basketball with my brother for years to come. I probably would have outgrown those pants by the Spring. Hey! Maybe that’s why my parents didn’t fork out the money for the pants?
I have no idea if Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was ever lucky enough to get a pair of parachute pants, but I know he knows what it’s like to be disappointed.
“I think there is obviously a level of disappointment of not making the CFP,” Sarkisian said Sunday while addressing the press after being selected to play in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. “Moving forward, for me and I think for our players, one of the key messages has to continue to be it is not about what just happened to us, it is about what are we going to do moving forward.”
This season has now become all about what Texas is going to do moving forward. And therein lies the silver lining.
