The transfer portal shopping for Texas this year feels like the husband who got sent to H-E-B with a Thanksgiving list and strict instructions: Don’t mess this up.
To his credit, he went to work. Creamy mashed potatoes? Check. Mac and cheese? Double check, even grabbed the fancy cheese like he’s on a Food Network show. Stuffing, green bean casserole, rolls, yams, cornbread mix, all secured. Now he’s cooking with confidence. Freelancing. Tosses in a pie. Adds a ham, which is the headliner for some people. Maybe some Hawaiian rolls because they were on sale and suddenly he’s a “value shopper.” The cart looks like he’s catering the whole neighborhood, and the receipt is long enough to qualify for financing.
There’s just one tiny problem. He forgot the turkey.
That’s how some Longhorn fans felt about the offensive line in this year’s transfer portal. It was as if Texas walked every aisle except the frozen section and somehow forgot the main course. The Longhorns stocked up on plenty of quality pieces. There’s real talent in that cart. Real depth. Real upside. But they never landed the Cam Coleman equivalent up front, the obvious, can’t-miss headliner that makes everyone relax on the drive home. Without it, the whole haul felt incomplete, even if the shelves were technically full.
Here’s the part nobody mentions.
Most of the defensive lines Texas will see this fall didn’t exactly ace their shopping trip either. Plenty of those carts are missing pieces, too, and some of them forgot more than just the turkey.
I decided to review the way-too-early projected starting lineups for the Power Four teams on the Longhorns’ schedule this season, apologies to Texas State and UTSA. The goal was simple: determine how many defensive lines could truly be considered “complete” now that transfer portal activity has slowed and programs have shifted their focus to winter conditioning and future recruiting cycles. The results were surprising, and they should give Longhorn fans reason for optimism.
Let’s start with Texas’ projected lineup:
LT – Trevor Goosby (4th year)
LG – Laurence Seymour (6th year)
C – Connor Robertson (5th year)
RG – Brandon Baker (3rd year)
RT – Melvin Siani (4th year)
Now, let’s dive into it.
