OU isn’t building a roster as other elite teams do

Things are not good at Oklahoma. In looking at recent data, the Sooners are trying to go through SEC life as college football's "drunk is no way to go through life" stage of talent acquisition and management.

In addition to signing fewer consensus super blue chip level prospects than I can remember it signing at any time in a while, OU is coupling that issue with more turnover among its elite prospects than any major program in the country (minimum of 7 current super blue chips).

On the other end of the spectrum, there are two things that the Longhorns are doing at an elite level...

a. Hitting big on its super blue chips
b. Losing view few of them.

When we talk about hitting on your SBCs, I’m talking Arch Manning, Colin Simmons, Ryan Wingo and Jelani McDonald as high profile hits, while guys like Brandon Baker, Kade Phillips and Lance Jackson have emerged as starting players in short order. Even a tier of unproven players behind them, which includes Justus Terry, Kaliq Lockett and Jonah Williams includes a ton of promise that no one is remotely giving up on. Oh, and that doesn’t even include guys like Cam Coleman, Rasheem Biles and Melvin Siani secured via the Portal.

As it relates to losing elite prospects… the Longhorns have lost a total of 5 out of 29 consensus super blue chips from 2022-2026. Jaime Ffrench, CJ Baxter and Johntay Cook are examples of what it looks like when you go bust, but there just haven’t been as many of those for Texas compared to its peers. During that same window, OU has lost 7 of the 14 super blue chips to the transfer portal.

It gets taken for granted that the Longhorns recruit well, but the program isn’t getting enough credit for maximizing the talent it brings in from a development of SBCs standpoint or from a squad management/retention standpoint behind the scenes.

Remember OU almost losing defensive tackle David Stone through the Portal last year? Because it wanted to ask one of the only elite prospects in the entire program, to take a sizable pay-cut? He’s one of the guys they somehow have kept!

Take a look.
