There are certain things in life you assume will always be there, right up until they’re not. Most of us have lived through that moment when the AC dies and the Texas heat turns your house into a hot yoga studio you never signed up for. Or when you turn the key in your car and hear nothing, realizing a dead battery has you stranded like someone who assumed their Spirit Airlines flight was actually going to take off on time, sitting at the gate watching passengers fight each other. Some of us have watched our kids turn the house into a real-life Lord of the Flies during a Wi-Fi outage, where only the strong (or the ones with the last-charged iPad) survive. I recently had my wallet stolen in Florida, and trying to function without money or fly home without ID felt less like a travel hiccup and more like I was drawing up a heist plan, minus the talent of Danny Ocean. And in those moments, you realize it’s not the big luxuries you miss, it’s the small, everyday certainties that quietly keep everything from going off the rails.
Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian learned what life was like when a key component of his offense simply wouldn’t start last season, even with folks pushing from behind and everyone waiting for him to pop the clutch. Sarkisian has long built his identity on a dependable run game, the kind that shows up on time and carries the load. From his days with Reggie Bush and LenDale White at USC to Bijan Robinson at Texas, a productive ground attack has been his calling card. Producing 1,000-yard running backs wasn’t just a result; it was something he took pride in, like a dad showing off pictures of his newborn.
Last season, though, Sarkisian woke up in a nightmare. Texas’ rushing offense ranked 11th in the SEC at 137 yards per game, while Missouri was ranked first at 228.31. The Longhorns were also 10th in explosive runs, meaning the big-play punch was missing, too. Quintrevion Wisner led the team with 643 yards and three touchdowns, Christian Clark added 248 and two scores, and somehow Arch Manning, the quarterback, finished as the second-leading rusher with 541 yards and 10 touchdowns. For a playcaller who prides himself on balance and physicality, it wasn’t just a dip, it was the kind of nightmare you wake up from and immediately check to make sure it’s not real. Unfortunately, it was.
Now, it’s time for the return of Sarkisian’s explosive run game.
