The Longhorns are two weeks into training camp which means the emphasis on camp is now switching from installing offenses and defenses to game prep for their week one matchup against Ohio State.
This is a shift in how head coach Steve Sarkisian has operated his camps in the past.
“The first two and a half weeks or so of training camp have been truly that of training camp,” Sarkisian told Texas high school coaches prior to the start of the season. “Then, we’ve adjusted that third week of where we’ve gotten into that first opponent, that bigger opponent. A few years ago, it was Alabama for that week. Last year it was Michigan. This year would be Ohio State. That was really implementing the gameplan for that game, then the fourth week, we would gameplan and prepare for our first opponent.
“This year, what it will look like is more of a two-week process of getting ready for the game. Similar, in a sense, I guess you could say almost to a bowl game. The reality of it is, probably a little more physicality, to tackle, to do those things to make sure that you’re sharp.”
It was Sark’s decision to make the change but he probably didn’t make it alone. The Texas head coach has a cadre of trusted assistants to help him get the team ready.
Texas is the only team in the country to have the same coordinators for the last five years and that cohesion is a big reason why Sark and his staff have their team as the number one ranked team in the country and poised to challenge for a national championship this year.
